An autonomous vehicle has two main parts, an Automated Driving System (ADS) comprised of sensors, computers and software that performs ail the driving tasks that a human driver does in a non-automated vehicle, and a Vehicle Platform (VP) which is the underling vehicle comprised of body, ch assis, interior and powertrain, that is driven by the ADS. In the case of self-driving cars, most of the engineering effort is focused on developing the Automated Driving System. The automated driving system is comprised of three sections that can be referred to as Sensing, Thinking and Acting. The Sensing system comprises sensors such as cameras, lidars, radars, ultrasonics and others to sense the vehicle's surroundings. The Thinking system comprises software running on microprocessors that performs the fonctions of perception (recognizing the objects such as other vehicles, pedestrians and road signs in the surrounding and their motion paths), prediction (predicting the future actions and positions of surrounding objects) and planning (planning the vehicle's path through the surrounding objects). The Acting system comprises of control systems and actuators that push the brake and accelerator pedals and turn the steering according to the path planned by the Thinking system. The Acting system also includes Human Machine Interfaces (HMis) such as Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for exchanging information with human vehicle occupants. THE DESIGN V As for other complex automotive systems, the engineering product development process for autonomous vehicles is represented with a V. Development starts with establishing requirements on the top left of the V, followed clown the left arm by requirements analysis, system architecture development, component architecture and detailed component development at the bottom. The process then proceeds up the right arm of the V with component verification and validation, followed by system integration, and system verification and validation. A comprehensive simulation and software development tool kit for autonomous vehicles must address all key parts of the product development process. HOW MEET THE CHALLENGES OF AUTOMAKERS?
